Tapas Revolution Birmingham Review

26/10/2015

Hey dolls! So I'm sure you're all aware that the new Birmingham Grand Central station is now open to the public and it's filled to the brim with various eateries and shopping destinations; some of which I've visited before and some of which I haven't. Tapas Revolution Birmingham happens to be one of the ones I haven't yet visited and when date night came around, me and my boo decided to give it a visit.

We got to Tapas revolution at about 6:30pm and it was just starting to fill up so we didn't have to wait too long to be seated and once we were sat down someone was with us within a couple of minutes to tell us about the days offers and to give us recommendations which was great because one thing I really hate is being seated in a restaurant and then swiftly being forgotten. The decor of the restaurant was very simple and informal and it kind of reminded me of a canteen but in a good way and the restaurant had a very cool and relaxed ambiance with friendly and knowledgeable staff.

We were lucky enough to arrive during happy hour which runs from 4pm to 7pm everyday so we took advantage and ordered a jug of sangria at half price which was such a great deal and we also ordered a couple of limoncito cocktails as it was 2-4-1 on cocktails too.  The drinks arrived quickly and  came with some complimentary bread and potato salad which we enjoyed whilst looking over the tapas menu.

The menu was two pages long and very uncomplicated despite having a lot of variety and it even included set menu deals for 2-3 people to share which looked quite tempting and  we would have gone for one of these set menus but me and my boo have such different tastes at times and as we couldn't swap out any of the dishes, we decided to order 3 individual tapas dishes each.

I went for the patatas bravas (deep fried potatoes with spicy tomato sauce and alioli), the arroz negro ( black rice with prawns abs squid served with alioli) and the torrenznos con mojo dulce (crispy pork belly with sweet and spicy sauce) while my boo also ordered the patatas bravas, paella valenciana (classic chicken and saffron rice dish) and the gambas al ajillo (tiger prawns cooked in chilli and garlic oil).

The tapas came in good time and looked absolutely amazing! The portions were also a good size but I would definitely recommend going for 2-3 tapas if you want the food to fill you up or if you're just greedy like me lol.

I enjoyed all of the tapas I ordered but my absolute favourite was the crispy pork belly which I highly recommend. The crackling was nice and crispy whilst the meat was tender and juicy and the sweet and sour sauce enhanced the flavour of the pork. I could have easily eaten 3 plates of just the pork and I would have been a very happy bunny. The black rice despite its slightly intimidating appearance was also delicious and eaten with the alioli it was simply divine with the juicy prawns and well cooked squid. The potatoes were also great and well seasoned and they were nice and crispy on the outside but nice and fluffy on the inside just how I like them. I also had a taste of my other half's tapas and the prawns were sooo good! They had a good kick from the chilli and garlic oil without overpowering the delicate flavour of the prawns. The paella was just okay in my opinion and didn't really stand up against the other dishes but it had a nice flavour, the chicken was well cooked and the saffron was not overpowering.

All in all the food was great and the service was good with my only complaint being that we were sat by the kitchen and the door's constant opening and shutting right behind my other half was annoying but this is me really nitpicking here. The staff could have also done with not hanging around and chatting loudly  by the till area as in my opinion this isn't very professional but in terms of the service we recieved at our table I can't fault them.

Would we go again? Certainly! It's a great after work spot, a place to catch up with friends or have a casual date so yes we would definitely visit again to try out more of their menu and I highly recommend Tapas revolution if you're looking for good tapas, good drinks and a nice friendly atmosphere. In terms of price I would personally say that is affordable and as you can see from the picture above our total meal including drinks came up to £21.25 each which is not too bad at all. Do note however that we did go during happy hour so outside of that window we would have probably paid slightly more for our drinks but even with that I still think it's a good price point so if you're ever in Grand Central station or have access to a Tapas revolution in your city you should definitely go in and try it. Trust me, you won't be disappointed. Have you ever been to Tapas Revolution? What were your thoughts? Toddles!
